Story of Ægir
From Norse mythology to brewery in Flåm
Ægir is referred to in Norse mythology as a jotne. He is the brother of Wind and Fire and is the ruler of the sea. Ægir his hall is not lit by fire, but by the brightest gold. Every year he invites the Aesir to a feast of food and drink in his banquet hall, Brime. Here, the beer and food serve themselves and the drinking horns fill themselves. Ægir brews, according to Odin, the best beer. It is brewed in the largest brewing vessel in the world, a mile deep. In Ægir 's hall, the gods had to keep the peace with each other and anyone who caused trouble was banished forever.
With Ægir as a role model, we have developed our brewery and associated taproom in his name. The brewery opened in June 2007 and has been a great success. Our beer is also available in many pubs and bars in Norway, and more and more are joining the list. We believe that people should be able to choose between different types of beer in the same way as with wine. That's why we offer many types of beer in our range, both top-fermented and bottom-fermented.
Our brewer, American Evan Lewis, has through twenty years of both home brewing and formal education, created his own versions of exciting and well-known beers. He draws inspiration from microbreweries internationally, not least from the USA, to develop new beers in Ægir Brewery in Flåm.
Ægir The brewery has a brewing capacity of 10hl in the pub brewery, and an annual capacity of around 1200hl. Most of the beer produced goes to resale in Norway, and some for export. Already in the third year of brewery operation, the capacity became too small, and a new production brewery was built in Flåm and taken into use in June 2012. The new brewery has a capacity of 35hl per brew, and an annual capacity of over 6,000hl. The capacity can be expanded over time to more than 20,000hl annually.
In the autumn of 2011, the brewery took a new step by installing a small distillery and expanding the product range. Initially, we are producing aquavit, and in the long term also whiskey and single malt whisky.
