Our history
Flåm has been a popular tourist destination since the mid-19th century, and the village has established itself as one of the most important traffic hubs in the west. With its unique location between fjord and mountains, Flåm has attracted travelers from all over the world for generations.
Our adventure began in the late 1980s, when four local friends saw the potential to create a new offering in Flåm – not only for travelers, but also for the local population. With strong faith in the future of the village, they invested in tourism by establishing a café and accommodation on the quay. The venture quickly became a success, and as the infrastructure developed, with new tunnels and the opening of the Gudvanga Tunnel, Flåm a ferry-free connection between Bergen and Oslo. This led to increased car traffic, more tourists arriving by the Flåm Railway, and a flourishing tourism industry. Flåm became a living service center.
In 2004, Leikanger girl Aud Melås returned home from the United States with her husband Evan Lewis. They bought the business, which at the time consisted of a café, restaurant and eight double rooms. With a vision of combining tradition, culture and quality in tourism, they decided to set up Flåm on the map in a completely new way. The result was Ægir Brewery – a commitment to world-class craft beer. Ægir BryggeriPub opened its doors with a concept inspired by Norse mythology. The characteristic stave church-like building with an interior characterized by driftwood, dragon heads and an impressive nine-meter high fireplace creates a unique atmosphere. The philosophy was simple, but innovative: people should have the opportunity to choose between different types of beer in the same way as a fine wine. Further investments soon followed – in 2008 a new hotel building and café were built and restaurant was upgraded. With increased capacity, developed Flåmsbrygga became one of the most exciting tourism concepts in the country. Year-round tourism grew, and guests from all corners of the world found their way here.
In February 2025, it opened Flåmsbrygga a new chapter when local owners, the Wangen Brothers, took over the business. The Wangen family has roots in trading activities dating back to the 1850s, when they established a general store to meet the needs of the local population. With a strong commitment to the local community, the business has grown to include several stores, and has now expanded into the hotel industry. With further investments in hotels, apartments, restaurants, souvenir shops and new exciting offers, the story continues. Flåmsbrygga will continue to be a place where tradition meets innovation – a vibrant tourism center in the heart of the fjords.
