DIVING TRIP TO FLÅM FOR GROUPS

Is your diving club looking for its next destination? Try wreck diving in Flåm - a wonderful winter dive on the wreck of the D/S Begonia.

On 19 April 1940, the D/S Begonia set out from Rotterdam in convoy bound for Murmansk. On the way north, the ships were attacked several times, and Begonia sought refuge in a small Flåm inst in the Sognefjord. On April 25th, the Begonia was discovered and attacked by German aircraft. The ship was badly hit, and Captain Kägi was killed. The Germans also bombed several buildings in Flåm . Begonia did not sink, and this led to concerns about new attacks. Norwegian forces therefore sank the ship shortly afterwards – but the exact date and how this happened is somewhat unclear. Some sources say that the ship was blown up on 29 April, while others believe that the bottom valves were opened by the boat "Vestlefrik" on 2 May.

The wreck of the Begonia is a great diving target where she rests on her keel, at a depth of 8 to just over 36 meters. Begonia is relatively intact, with many beautiful and interesting details. Fresh water flowing into the fjord in the area can affect diving conditions, and therefore it is recommended to dive in the winter for the best possible visibility.
